Clemson’s struggles have become impossible to ignore, and one national college football analyst believes the Tigers are facing problems that go well beyond their disappointing start to the season.
Following Clemson’s 41-13 loss to No. 4 Miami in Death Valley, CBS Sports columnist Brandon Marcello offered a harsh assessment of where Dabo Swinney’s program stands in his Week 5 overreactions column.
Marcello suggested that the Tigers have fallen significantly behind the programs it once competed with for national championships, pointing to an approach that has struggled to keep pace with the changing landscape of college football.
“Clemson has completely lost the magic that transformed it into an annual powerhouse, regressing into a squad trapped in a bygone era.”
The loss to Miami, the second-worst defeat of Swinney’s tenure, only added to the growing concerns about Clemson’s direction. After opening the season with a disappointing performance at LSU, the Tigers have continued to struggle against elite competition.
Marcello also questioned whether Clemson can return to national prominence without major changes to its roster-building strategy.
While Swinney’s enormous buyout and legendary status make a coaching change unlikely, Marcello argued that the Tigers must become much more aggressive in the transfer portal. He specifically pointed to the need for a substantial financial commitment, potentially $25 million, to strengthen key positions such as quarterback, wide receiver and the offensive line.
He also raised concerns about Clemson’s long-term position in college football, particularly with another round of major television negotiations approaching and the possibility of future conference realignment.
