ABERDEEN, S.D. (AUGUSTANA ATHLETICS) – A three-game road trip for the Augustana Viking volleyball team ended in a three-set loss to Northern State on Saturday afternoon by scores of 19-25, 21-25 and 25-27. The loss pushes the Vikings to 9-8 so far this season with a 3-6 showing in the conference while the Wolves improve to 12-5 and 7-2. Reagan Jansen led AU with 14 kills, nine digs and two service aces as Kiylah Franke finished with 31 assists and eight digs. Abby Gruber recorded eight kills while hitting .385 and added a service ace and Maya Wente tallied eight kills on a .292 hitting percentage alongside her three total blocks. After trading the first four points of the first set, NSU moved ahead 5-2. But kills by Wente, Jansen and Sydney Tims helped AU pull even twice, including at 8-8. The Wolves answered from there with four straight points to build a 12-8 lead and later pushed the margin to 22-15. AU put together a late four-point stretch with a Lucy Belisle kill, a Gruber ace, a Wente-Belisle block, and a Wente kill to get within 22-19, but NSU closed the set with a 25-19 finish. AU was within 8-5 at the beginning of the second set before the Wolves scored four straight to build a 12-5 lead. After NSU went ahead 15-8, AU answered with a pair of Gruber kills, two Jansen service aces and a Belisle kill to get within 15-14. The Wolves pushed back again to 18-14 and later led 20-16, but three Jansen kills and a Wente kill brought Augustana even at 20-20. NSU scored the next two points before AU cut it to 22-21 on a Jansen kill but the Wolves closed the set at 25-21. The third set started for Augustana with a Gruber kill and a block by Belisle and Gruber for a 2-0 lead, but NSU soon moved in front. The home wolves took control in early exchanges and later pushed the margin to 15-12. AU came back with points from Belisle, an NSU attack error, and a Julia Blom ace to tie it at 15-15, then answered another Wolves point with a Wente kill. Northern State and Augustana would go on to tie 15 times throughout that third set, but a Jansen kill broke one of those said ties to go ahead 17-16. The set stayed even late, with AU pulling level at 21-21 on Wente’s kill, tying it again at 22-22 and 23-23, and reaching 24-23 on an NSU setting error before the Wolves answered. Wente put AU back in front 25-24, but NSU scored the final three points, ending the set 27-25.
