Week 7 is in the books. We’re three weeks away from the start of the regular season. Over the next few weeks, area teams will fight to keep their playoff hopes alive down the stretch. Here’s five takeways from this week’s action:
Springfield peaking at right time
The Wildcats were dominant in a 43-12 victory over Wayne in Springfield, taking sole possession of first place in the Greater Western Ohio Conference.
Springfield’s defense held the Warriors high-powered offense to 12 points, its lowest title since a Week 2 loss to Cincinnati St. Xavier.
The Wildcats are now in the driver’s seat in the GWOC championship race. They’re seeking their second straight league title and fourth in the six years.
Springfield travels to Beavercreek (4-3, 2-2) next week, before a home game against Fairmont (3-4, 2-2) and the regular season finale at Northmont (1-6, 0-4).
The Wildcats are likely to receive a first-round bye as a top-4 seed in Division I, Region 2, according to Fantastic50.net.
Fairmont be Fairmonting
The Fairmont Firebirds took its ball control offense to a new level Friday night against Northmont.
The Firebirds led 14-0 at the half and received the kickoff to start the second half. They drove the length of the field the entire 12 minutes of the third quarter and scored on the first play of the fourth quarter on a 5-yard pass from quarterback Reagan Heffner to senior Davion Porter to make it 21-0.
The Firebirds then recovered an onside kick and scored with less than seven minutes remaining on a 1-yard run by Damien Patten to make it 27-0. Fairmont again recovered an onside kick and kneeled near the goalline as time expired to secure the victory — keeping Northmont’s offense off the field the entire second half.
Fairmont’s time of possession was 35 minutes, 12 seconds. Northmont had the ball for 12 minutes, 48 seconds. The Firebirds out-gained the Thunderbolts 371-108, racking up 277 yards on the ground.
Central Buckeye Conference chaos
A week after falling to London 59-18 in their CBC Kenton Trail Division opener, Urbana bounced back with a 28-27 victory over previously unbeaten Jonathan Alder on a last-second TD pass from Grady Lantz to sophomore Carter Houseman.
Thanks to Urbana’s victory, Kenton Ridge and London stand atop the CBC Kenton Trail with three games to play.
The Cougars beat Tecumseh 35-7 on Friday. They host three teams with a combined record of 16-5 over the next three weeks — they host Urbana (5-2) next week, travel to Jonathan Alder (6-1) in Week 9 and host London (5-2) in their home finale.
First-place battle in GCL Co-ed next week
Now that Alter coach Ed Domsitz has reached 400 career wins, the Knights (5-2, 2-0) can focus their efforts on a first-place showdown next week against Cincinnati McNicholas (5-2, 2-0).
After a 1-2 start, the Rockets have won four straight games including back-to-back wins over Carroll and Chaminade Julienne, outscoring their GCL foes 77-7.
Alter beat McNicholas 12-0 last season. They’ve won three of the last five games in the series.
McNicholas hasn’t won a GCL Co-ed title since 2017. They face Alter, Badin (5-2, 1-1) and Fenwick (4-3, 1-1) to end the regular season.
Greeneview’s OHC South streak comes to an end
Greeneview has been the dominant in the Ohio Heritage Conference South Division since 2021. Since falling to Greenon 21-20 in Week 6 of the COVID-shortened 2020 season, the Rams had won 26 games against South Division opponents.
How dominant were the Rams during that stretch? Only two teams — Southeastern in 2023 and Cedarville last season — had come within seven points of beating Greeneview in divisional play. They pitched 11 shutouts during that stretch.
On Friday, Greeneview’s streak came to an end with a 37-0 loss to Madison Plains. The Rams will look to bounce back against rival Southeastern next week at Don Nock Field in Jamestown. SE beat New London — who they played in place of Catholic Central — 50-39 at Trojan Stadium.
Odds and ends
• Greenon’s 62-30 win against Cedarville is the highest combined scoring game in the Miami Valley this season.
• Rinse and repeat for Kenton Ridge. Six straight wins for the Cougars has seen them score at least 35 points hold their opponent to seven or fewer each time.
• Greenville retained the Little Brown Jug on a walk-off touchdown pass by Grady Looker to Isaac Kerg to beat Sidney 41-40.
• A second last play win in the Miami Valley League saw Fairborn convert a two-point try on a Daylen Switzer run to beat Piqua in overtime 36-35.
• Fairfield did not score in the second half and allowed more than 500 yards of offense to Lakota East, but won the game 35-31.
• A stunner in the Midwest Athletic Conference as D-VII No. 2 Minster suffered its first loss of the season 14-13 to Anna. Marion Local is now alone in first place, beating Fort Recovery 33-0 and extending its regular season win streak to 65 games.
• There are now three unbeaten teams remaining in the area: Bellbrook, Marion Local, and Tri-Village.
• Centerville’s first win of the season, 35-0 against Miamisburg, ensures the Elks will not go winless for what could have been the second time in program history.
• Teams that potentially can clinch at minimum a share of their respective league titles next week: Springfield (GWOC), Fairborn (MVL-Valley), Valley View (SWBL-Buckeye), and Princeton (GMC).

15 minutes from kickoff
6:45 p.m.: Week 7 is set to kick off in about 15 minutes.
Here’s the scene from Carroll High School’s Spoerl-Bartlett Field in Riverside as Alter prepares to take on the Patriots in Greater Catholic League Co-Ed action.
With a victory, Knights coach Ed Domsitz will become the third coach in Ohio history to reach 400 wins. Nationally, only 35 other coaches have reached 400 victories, 15 of which are still active.
Steubenville coach Reno Saccoccia is Ohio’s all-time leader with 454 victories. Saccoccia’s Big Red beat Alter 34-33 in the 2006 D-IV state title game. Two years later, the Knights beat Steubenville 21-6 in the D-IV title game to win their first state championship in program history.

Key conference matchups highlight Week 7
3:45 p.m.: Week 7 kicks off in a few hours in what will hopefully be a dry Friday night. Several key matchups will provide some clarity in conference races across the Miami Valley.
Here are a few of the games we’ll have coverage from this evening:
*
Wayne (3-3, 3-0 GWOC) at Springfield (4-2, 3-0): Once of these teams will stand atop the Greater Western Ohio Conference after tonight’s clash in Clark County. The Warriors have the highest-scoring offense in the conference, while Springfield allows the least amount of points.
*
Alter (4-2, 1-0 GCL Co-Ed) at Carroll (2-4, 0-1 GCL Co-Ed): Knights coach Ed Domsitz is one win away from 400 career wins. He can reach that milestone tonight against the rival Patriots, who last beat the Knights in 2019.
*
Lakota West (5-1, 4-1 GMC) at Middletown (4-2, 4-1 GMC): A battle of second-place Greater Miami Conference squads who are looking to keep pace in the league race with Princeton (6-0, 5-0).
*
Franklin (0-6, 0-1 SWBL) at Bellbrook (6-0, 1-0 SWBL): The Division III top-ranked Golden Eagles lost to the Wildcats a year ago, ending their Southwestern Buckeye League division title streak. Bellbrook will look for revenge on Homecoming.
*
Badin (5-1, 1-0 GCL Co-Ed) at Fenwick (3-3, 0-1 GCL Co-Ed): The Rams have won six straight against the rival Eagles.
Check back here later tonight for score updates and highlights from across the Miami Valley.
