The Purdue Canon returns home!
The Purdue Boilermakers were able to defeat the Illinois Fighting Illini 24-17 in a game that ended the nation’s longest losing streak against power conference teams. It also ended a more than two year B1G losing streak, the last victory coming against the Indiana Hoosiers in 2023.
Early in the game, Purdue had to settle for back to back field goals when they had moved effectively into the Illinois redzone. It was a list of errors on both of those drives that cost Purdue opportunities to go up 14-0 but found the Boilers up 6-0 instead.
Purdue’s defense returned the favor for the offense as they held Illinois to a single field goal attempt early on that the Illini kicker missed. Browne was able to finally lead Purdue into the endzone and push the lead to 13-0 as he found Harris on a 21 yard touchdown throw. That touchdown is Harris’ second of the season. Unfortunately, the Boilers gave up a late touchdown to end the first half that brought the score to 13-7.
To start the second half, the Boilers were able to hold the Illini to a punt on their first possession even though they again worked their way into Purdue territory. That was a big part of this game as the Illini were never able to seize any sort of control when it seemed Purdue was teetering on giving the game away. Instead, Purdue took over at their own 10 yard line and on their responding possession found them converting two big 3rd downs before settling for a third FG from freshman kicker Jacobo Echeverria Lozano, this one from 33 yards out.

Following the converted field goal that pushed the score to 16-7, the Illini drove down to the Purdue 15 but on 3rd and 3, the Boilermaker defense stuffed the Illini for a 2 yard loss and then the Illini did not convert a 4th and 5 attempt. That proved to be a very costly decision that would have made it just a six point game. Purdue couldn’t take advantage as they quickly went three and out while the Illini seemed to quickly respond with a long touchdown pass that would have made it a 16-13 game. The Boilers really got their first break of the game as the touchdown was called back due to a holding call in the backfield and the Illini were forced to punt again.
It was a bit of deja-vu as Purdue went 3 and out again and gave the ball back to the Illini. Purdue forced Illinois into another long 3rd down but Purdue gave up another long first down. That is something that is coming to be a very standard part of this defensive unit over the course of this season.
The Illini ended up converting a season long 54 yard field goal to pull the score to 16-10 but the Illini made their second very questionable decision to squib the ensuing kickoff. That was easily recovered and gave Purdue great field position to start their drive with 8:05 left in the 4Q from their own 39 yd line.
Browne looked supremely confident as the play calling looked much more like a team looking to win a game rather than trying to just hold on. Browne drove the offense down the field for a game sealing touchdown the back of quick throws to start the drive before he found Chauncey Magwood deep down the sideline for a 31 yard gain to the 2 yard line. Magwood would end the game with 5 receptions for 53 yards and it took just two plays after from Harris in the wildcat to get into the endzone. That finished Purdue’s scoring and pushed the Purdue lead to fourteen at 24-10.
Ryan Browne was again very efficient and didn’t put the ball in bad positions as he threw for 255 yards on 18-27 and 1 touchdown. Ijeboi once again led the Boilers with 65 yards rushing while Harris chipped in 20 yards and the game sealing touchdown.
The offense and special teams looked like they have much of the entire season but a defense that limited the Illini to 17 points and 345 yards following an impressive showing against Ohio State (462 total yards) was a surprise. It’s a welcome sight for a defense that has been the reason for multiple losses in Barry Odom’s first two season but especially tough when you consider this type of effort likely has Purdue sitting at 4-1 with a very clear path to get to a bowl game with 7 games remaining. In fact, today’s defensive effort shows an improvement of nearly 28 points and an improvement of 101 less yards given up from their season average against power conference opponents.
Purdue will return home against the Minnesota Golden Gophers for an opportunity to win back to back B1G games since the 2022 season where Purdue made the B1G Conference Championship Game. It also marks the first time in 24 games where Purdue has beaten a power conference opponent, the longest streak amongst power conference teams.
