The Cleveland Browns are turning to quarterback Shedeur Sanders to lead the offense in their upcoming matchup against the New Orleans Saints. The decision comes as veteran starter Deshaun Watson remains sidelined while navigating the NFL’s mandatory concussion protocol, according to ESPN.
Team officials confirmed that Watson sustained the injury during last week’s game, necessitating a period of medical evaluation to ensure he meets league-mandated recovery standards before returning to the field. Because Watson has not yet been cleared by independent neurologists, the coaching staff confirmed that Sanders will take the starting snaps in New Orleans, as reported by the NFL.
The shift to Sanders marks a notable moment for the Browns, who are looking to maintain offensive consistency despite the sudden change under center. Head coach Kevin Stefanski emphasized the importance of preparation for the backup quarterback throughout the week. Addressing the media during a press conference, the coach noted, “Shedeur has been working hard in the film room and on the practice field to be ready for this opportunity,” reported the team’s official media channel.
The Saints’ defense will now pivot their game plan to account for Sanders’ specific skill set, which differs from Watson’s traditional pocket presence. Analysts suggest that the Browns may lean heavily on their rushing attack to support the younger quarterback during his first start of the season. The organization remains hopeful that Watson will progress through the concussion protocol quickly, though his status for future weeks remains uncertain based on his daily medical evaluations, per the outlets.
Fans and league observers are closely watching how the Browns adjust to this personnel change during a critical stretch of the schedule. The team is currently evaluating the depth chart to ensure sufficient coverage at the position while Watson remains in the protocol. As the organization prepares for Sunday, the focus remains on execution and minimizing errors, according to the outlets.
