A pair of longtime contributors to the Illinois High School Association state finals have been recognized by the stateโs prep sports governing body as Distinguished Service Award honorees for the 2026-27 school year.
Brien Dunphy and Fred McNeeley will be honored as part of a five-person group. According to the IHSA, the award is “One of the Associationโs highest honors, presented annually to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Illinois high school sports and activities.”
Brien Dunphy, Peoria High

Former Peoria High athletics director Brien Dunphy has been the cross country state finals meet manager since 2011, while also being a member of the IHSA cross country advisory committee for the last 15 years. Some of his many accolades include 2019 Illinois Coaches Association Athletic Director of the Year.
โOne of Brien Dunphyโs many signature qualities is his willingness to roll up his sleeves and do what it takes to put on the best event of its kind,” IHSA assistant executive director Kraig Garber said in a release. “There is never a task too small for Brien. His dedication to Illinois student athletes, the IHSA, Peoria High School, and the Peoria community are recognized and greatly appreciated.โ
Dunphy, who in retirement acts as the Peoria Notre Dame student services director, will be honored at the cross country state finals on Nov. 7.
“I am very honored to share this award with the entire Peoria High School cross country community,” Dunphy said in a release. “Peoria High teachers, coaches, administrators, and Lion teams host State Cross Country and many other activities with great pride, and every year the Peoria Park District strives to make Detweiller Park the best championship venue in Illinois.
“I am very grateful to the IHSA for supporting me, Peoria High School, and State Cross Country.”
Fred McNeeley, Princeville official

Princeville native Fred McNeeley will begin his 30th season as an IHSA official, serving as a longtime softball umpire in a career that includes three state finals appearances. He was named the 2026 IHSA softball Official of the Year and was inducted into the Illinois Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2013.
โFred is never one for the limelight or recognition,” IHSA associate executive director Tracie Henry said in a release, “but he is very deserving of it. He has worked tirelessly to support high school sports and athletes in Illinois, and the sport of softball has benefited tremendously because of his efforts.โ
McNeeley, who serves as president of the Central Illinois Softball Association, will be honored as the 2027 softball state finals in June.
“Receiving this award is not a reflection of a solitary effort,” McNeeley said in a release. โTo me, this award stands as a testament to the incredible mentors, colleagues, and family members who guided me along the way.โ
