Shannon Sharpe had settled into a routine at Fox Sports. He worked with Skip Bayless, went home, trained, came back and did it all again, and by his own admission, he probably would have stayed that way.

Then the routine disappeared. Sharpe and Bayless reunited on the September 30 episode of Club Shay Shay and finally talked openly about how their seven-year run on Undisputed ended. What came next was less bitter than expected because Bayless admitted he still misses having Sharpe across from him.

Skip Bayless Still Misses Shannon Sharpe

Bayless said their chemistry on television could not be recreated with different people. He remembered their arguments, preparation and ability to predict how the other person would respond in the studio.

“I miss being across from you,” Bayless said. “I’m proud of you. I do, from the bottom of my heart, root for you.”

Bayless then made a comment that changed the mood of the conversation. “Them shoving you out the back door was the best thing that ever happened,” Bayless told Sharpe.

His point was not about Sharpe’s time on Undisputed. Bayless was talking about the career Sharpe built after leaving the show.

Sharpe said he never planned to leave the program on his own. He had become comfortable with the job and saw no reason to walk away from a role that was part of his daily routine.

“I would have never left,” Sharpe said. “Because it was easy. I had gotten to a routine.”

Shannon Sharpe’s Exit Created A Different Career

The reunion also revealed another part of Sharpe’s departure. Sharpe said he wanted to keep control of Club Shay Shay while remaining at Fox.

He believed the podcast could grow by featuring entertainers, celebrities and influencers instead of focusing mainly on athletes. According to Sharpe, Fox sent a termination notice after he made that request.

Shannon Sharpe said a fax was already arriving at his attorney’s office when he got there. In his view, that showed the decision had moved past the negotiation stage.

Bayless said he tried to keep their partnership together. He remembered visiting Sharpe’s dressing room before the split and learning that the show would not continue in the same form.

Bayless also believed Fox executives tried to rebuild the program without understanding what made it work. In his view, the chemistry came from his relationship with Sharpe and could not be copied with other hosts.

Sharpe now hosts Club Shay Shay and Nightcap, while Bayless has built his own digital media platform since leaving Fox. Their careers moved in different directions, but the reunion showed that their personal connection remained.

Bayless said he still misses working with Sharpe. Sharpe’s comments also showed that being forced to leave helped create a career path he had never planned to follow.
