Former President Barack Obama announced the passing of his family pet, a Portuguese Water Dog named Sunny who spent more than a decade by their side.
The 44th president shared the news in a public statement honoring the 13-year-old canine.
Reflecting on her energetic presence, Obama characterized the canine as a “force of nature” who brought joy to their household.
Remembering her interactions with his daughters, Malia and Sasha, Obama wrote, “She loved the girls, even if they were pestering her when she was napping”.
Describing her relationship with White House staff members, Obama noted, “She loved our team, and would often follow them around helping on the job”.
The Obama family welcomed Sunny into their home at the start of their second presidential term in Washington.
She quickly joined their older pet companion, Bo, forming a close bond between the two animals.
Commenting on Sunny’s protective instincts, Obama observed that she held a bond with Bo, “who she rightly sensed wasn’t always as alert and attentive as she was”.
Highlighting her habits, Obama shared that Sunny preferred human interaction over dogs, called her a “loud and sloppy drinker,” and remarked that “despite being a Portuguese Water Dog, she hated getting wet”.
Expressing affection for her role in their daily lives, Obama wrote, “But as far as our family was concerned, she was pretty much perfect, and for thirteen years, she would be by our side – always loyal, always sweet, always ready for adventure, still fiery and gorgeous till the very end of her days”.
Concluding his tribute, Obama added, “We will miss her terribly, and imagine she’s with her big brother now, making sure he’s okay”.
The loss of Sunny marks the end of a memorable chapter for the former first family.
