The European Union announced on Friday that it is closely monitoring the unfolding situation in Madagascar following reports of a military power grab in the country.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels, European Commission spokesman Anouar El Anouni emphasized the EU’s concern over the developments and called on all stakeholders in Madagascar to engage in dialogue aimed at restoring democratic governance, AFP reported.

“We call for dialogue between all parties with a view to restoring democratic values,” El Anouni said, underscoring the bloc’s commitment to supporting democratic institutions and political stability in the island nation.

The EU’s statement follows mounting international concern after military forces reportedly assumed control of key government institutions earlier this week. Observers fear the takeover could further destabilize Madagascar, which has experienced recurrent political crises in recent years.

European officials said they remain in contact with regional partners and international organizations to assess the situation and explore diplomatic measures to encourage a peaceful and constitutional resolution.
