A 33-year-old Long Island man faces first-degree assault charges after allegedly stabbing a senior citizen in the neck inside a church basement last week.
Police identified the suspect as Daniel Escobar of Bay Shore following a violent confrontation around 8:30 p.m. Friday.
The scuffle broke out during a meeting hosted in the basement of First United Methodist Church in Amityville.
Emergency responders transported the 65-year-old victim to a local hospital for serious injuries.
Explaining the arrest timeline, police officials confirmed that “Escobar was tracked down and taken into custody shortly after 10:20 p.m.”.
Following his arrest, officers led the suspect out of the First Precinct in handcuffs Saturday for his court arraignment.
Detailing the bail terms set, legal authorities noted that “Judge Mary Catherine Mullen ordered him held on $150,000 cash bail or a $300,000 bond”.
Addressing inquiries regarding motives, law enforcement representatives stated that “police have not disclosed the nature of the dispute that led to the stabbing”.
Officials confirmed it remains unclear what specific group was assembling at the church, which hosts various local organizations.
The suspect remains held in custody, and Escobar is due back in court Thursday.
