A jury convicted a 52-year-old Florida man of murder Wednesday following a brief three-day trial regarding the 2024 death of a man at a Ruskin marina.
Kamal Padlowski was found guilty of one count of murder after a jury deliberated on the evidence presented in a Hillsborough County courtroom.
The victim’s family, including his wife and daughter, attended the proceedings and watched surveillance footage of the fatal encounter for the first time.
Prosecutors argued that Padlowski met the victim, Melvin Jimenez, at a bar near Bahia Beach Boulevard in May 2024 before inviting him back to his boat to continue drinking.
The trial began Tuesday with opening statements where the judge heard initial arguments regarding the second-degree murder charge brought against Padlowski.
State attorneys presented surveillance video showing Padlowski shoving Jimenez off the boat and onto the dock, where the victim struck his head on a fiberglass dock box.
The footage further captured Padlowski grabbing the motionless victim by his ankles and throwing him into the water where he never resurfaced.
Witnesses testified that Padlowski made statements about possibly killing a man before authorities arrived at the scene to investigate the disturbance.
Reflecting on the impact of the surveillance evidence and the loss of her father, Kimberly Sprenger shared her heartbreak with reporters after the trial ended.
“He was a good person. He would never do anything to deserve this. No one deserves to be killed in broad daylight from other people,” according to WFLA.
The trial also featured bodycam video of conversations between officers and witnesses, as well as testimony from Padlowski himself who took the stand.
Angela Sprenger, the victim’s wife, expressed her frustration after hearing the defendant testify on the stand during the multi-day trial.
“All the things he was saying was just total lies. And to try to go after my husband’s character that way is just so awful,” per WFLA.
Following the jury’s decision on Wednesday evening, the judge adjudicated Padlowski guilty and immediately revoked his bond.
He now faces a maximum sentence of life in prison for the murder of the local man during the altercation at the boat dock.
Sentencing has been scheduled for Aug. 17 at 2 p.m., at which time the court will also hear post-trial motions from the defense.
Kimberly Sprenger noted that the conviction provides a sense of accountability for the man who took her father’s life and ruined her family’s peace.
“At least he’ll get to spend the rest of his day thinking about my dad and how maybe if he was a better man and had a better character like my dad, he would have made the decisions that he did to lead to this,” reported the outlet.
The jury’s verdict brings a close to the trial phase for a case that has affected the Ruskin community since the body was pulled from the water in 2024.
This conclusion allows the family to begin their search for closure after months of waiting for justice to be served in the local court system.
