The late Senator Lindsey Graham, a fixture in South Carolina politics for decades, remained one of the few lifelong bachelors in the U.S. Senate.
Throughout his lengthy career in both the House and Senate, Graham never married and had no children. When discussing his single status, the prominent Republican leader often employed a signature self-deprecating wit.
Regarding his personal life, Graham famously noted, “I never found time to meet the right girl, or the right girl was smart enough not to have time for me”.
While he never wed, Graham’s personal life was largely defined by the responsibility he assumed at age 22 following the deaths of his parents within a 15-month span. He became the legal guardian of his 13-year-old sister, Darline Graham Nordone, and moved closer to home to raise her.
Reflecting on her brother’s dedication, Nordone stated at his 2016 presidential announcement, “He’s kind of like a brother, a father and a mother rolled into one”.
Graham’s memoir revealed that he had been in several serious relationships earlier in his life, per reported Wikipedia excerpts. These included a law school girlfriend named Debbie, as well as Carol and Sylvia during his military service in Germany. He reportedly considered proposing to Sylvia before his life took a different path.
Politically, Graham was a staunch defender of the traditional definition of marriage. He voted for the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 and supported a 2006 constitutional amendment to define the institution as being between one man and one woman.
In 2022, Graham voted against the Respect for Marriage Act, stating, “states should decide the issue of marriage” rather than the federal government.
