Authorities in Nevada have officially identified human remains found stuffed inside a barrel on the shoreline of Lake Mead as Edward Lelburian Jackson, an Arkansas man whose early-1980s homicide has remained unsolved for decades.
Jackson, who was in his mid- to late 50s when he died, was killed by a gunshot wound to the head. His body was initially discovered by boaters in May 2022 after receding water levels exposed the rusted barrel near the lake’s edge. Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse announced that investigators confirmed his identity through advanced forensic genealogy profiling, facial reconstruction composites, and clothing retrieved from the site.
Potential Ties to Organized Crime Under Review
The grim discovery sparked immediate speculation regarding ties to Las Vegas’ historical organized crime era, which stretched from the 1940s through the mid-1980s. While stuffing victims into barrels was historically associated with mob executions, homicide detectives emphasized that no direct evidence has yet linked Jackson’s death to the mob.
“It’s an unsolved case. It will never be closed until we solve it,” said Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Lt. Robert Price, noting that investigators have not ruled out any possibilities. Experts from The Mob Museum in Las Vegas observed that the circumstances closely mirror notable organized crime hits from that period, including the 1976 killing of mobster John Roselli.

A Cold Case Revived by Climate Conditions
Investigators discovered that Jackson had previously resided in California and Utah before disappearing in the early 1980s. His family never filed a missing persons report because he was known to travel frequently across the country without maintaining regular contact. Police are currently seeking tips to determine what brought Jackson to southern Nevada prior to his murder.
Jackson’s remains are among several sets of human bones and historical artifacts uncovered in recent years as prolonged regional drought and water overuse have caused Lake Mead to recede to historically low levels. Homicide detectives continue to pursue leads in Jackson’s case and urge anyone with relevant information to contact local law enforcement.
