The San Antonio Spurs might have unearthed a rebounding monster in rookie Tarris Reed Jr. this offseason. At least that’s what Devin Vassell believes.
The Spurs wing showered the big man with praise for the outstanding skill he’s shown on the boards during preseason. He’s even got a nickname for the youngster already.
“Oh, man, that’s a monster right there… I call him a walking 10 boards. As soon as he gets in the game, I feel like he’s getting 10 boards,” Vassell said of Reed Jr., per Tom Orsborn.

Reed Jr., 23, was drafted No. 26 overall by the Denver Nuggets in the 2026 NBA Draft. However, he was quickly traded to the Spurs for the No. 35 pick and two second-rounders.
That move is already looking like a shrewd deal based on Reed’s impressive preseason showing. He broke out with a 17-rebound, four-steal effort against the Utah Jazz on Oct. 12. That performance earned him more playing time in their next game against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday. He produced once again, as he finished with four points, nine rebounds and three blocks in 21 minutes.
The top of the Spurs’ big man rotation is set in stone at the moment. Superstar Victor Wembanyama is the undoubted starter, and veteran Luke Kornet is his primary backup. However, the Spurs are expected to manage Wemby’s minutes throughout the long regular season, so minutes are likely available for the third big man on the depth chart.
The battle for that spot could come down to rookies Reed Jr. and Jayden Quaintance, whom the Spurs drafted No. 20. But Quaintance is still sidelined and recovering from a knee procedure in July. That has allowed Reed Jr. to get the upper hand in that battle thanks to his strong preseason play, which has impressed his teammates.
