If we’re being honest, watching the Miami Dolphins in 2026 has not exactly been an enjoyable experience. The losses are piling up, the offense continues to struggle, and there are already rumblings from the team’s fanbase about the job head coach Jeff Hafley is doing.

But there is a silver lining to all of this, and it starts with the rookies.

Miami’s 2026 draft class is getting thrown into the fire, and that experience could pay significant dividends as the Dolphins move forward. Through five games, Hafley’s club leads the league in snaps from rookies, with over 2,000 such cases heading into their bye week. The Cleveland Browns are second — but are a staggering 600 snaps behind Miami in that department.

First-round offensive guard Kadyn Proctor has played 293 offensive snaps, appearing on 100% of Miami’s offensive plays. Second-round linebacker Jacob Rodriguez has logged 311 defensive snaps, while first-round cornerback Chris Johnson has played 304 defensive snaps. Fifth-round safety Michael Taaffe isn’t far behind, with 287 defensive snaps to his name.

That’s a massive amount of responsibility for a group of players who were playing college football just months ago.

Rodriguez has already established himself as a major contributor in the middle of Miami’s defense — and is in the running for the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Johnson is getting valuable experience against high-end NFL receivers, while Taaffe is learning how to operate in a professional secondary. Proctor, meanwhile, is receiving the kind of weekly education that only comes from facing elite NFL defensive linemen.

Will they make mistakes? Absolutely. They’re rookies. But every missed assignment, every difficult matchup offers another opportunity to learn.

When the 2027 season rolls around, these players won’t be entering training camp as inexperienced newcomers trying to figure everything out. They’ll have an entire NFL season under their belts. They’ll understand the speed of the game, know what their coaches expect, and have a much clearer idea of what they need to do to improve.

That doesn’t guarantee they’ll become stars, but it gives Miami a chance to build around players who have already experienced the initial growing pains of a rebuild.

Now, imagine pairing that experience with a few quality free-agent additions. Miami currently has over $110 million in projected cap space for 2027 according to Spotrac.

The Dolphins won’t spend recklessly. Instead, they’ll pluck a couple of young, high-character standouts in search of a new home. General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan needs to identify a few difference-makers to add to his roster while allowing Miami’s young core the opportunity to continue to develop.

Of course, the Dolphins still have plenty to prove this year. But losing in 2026 doesn’t mean the season will be a complete waste.

Miami is finding out which young players can handle daunting NFL responsibilities, and those answers could prove invaluable moving forward. If Sullivan gets the next offseason right, this painful year could become the foundation for something special.

The Dolphins might not be ready to contend today, but the hope is that the experience these rookies are gaining now will help Miami get there a whole lot sooner than some expect.

Keep the faith. Trust in Jon-Eric Sullivan. Fins up.
