San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel suffered a hamstring injury Sunday against the Seahawks and will miss an extended period of time, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. Shanahan did not indicate that Samuel is a candidate for injured reserve.
“Deebo had a hamstring, got it pretty good so he’s going to miss some time,” Shanahan said. “(Linebacker Garret) Wallow (is) in the same boat. Not quite as bad as Deebo’s, but he’s going to miss at least a couple weeks also.”
Samuel went down with about five minutes to go in the third quarter. After he took a toss from quarterback Brock Purdy in the backfield, Samuel, searching for a hole in the left side of Seattle’s defense, burst forward before his body folded to the ground. He fumbled the ball and remained prostrate on the Lumen Field turf for some time, then gingerly limped off the field while grimacing. He was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game.
The 49ers could ill afford to lose another wideout. They are already without Ricky Pearsall (knee, out for the season), Demarcus Robinson (ankle, on IR), De’Zhaun Stribling (ankle, on IR) and Christian Kirk (calf, on IR), while Mike Evans is playing through a rib injury – albeit quite effectively. Jacob Cowing also hurt his ankle on Sunday, Shanahan said, but he returned to the game, suggesting his injury is not serious.

At one point Sunday, when Cowing exited, the 49ers had just three available and healthy receivers: Evans, Brandin Cooks and Jordan Watkins.
Samuel’s absence will likely lead to an increased role for Cooks, Shanahan said. The veteran filled Samuel’s role admirably after he exited, hauling in a seven-yard go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter of the 49ers’ wild 32-29 victory.
Kirk has been on IR since the start of the season, and is not expected to return for the 49ers’ Week 6 game against the Commanders, Shanahan said Sunday. The Niners will look to activate one of the team’s practice squad receivers – Malik Turner, Xavier Smith, Will Pauling or Wesley Grimes – ahead of their game on Monday, as Shanahan likes to have five available receivers on game day.
“I think we have enough,” Shanahan said. “It’s a huge challenge, but we do have guys in this building who can do it, and we’ll always look (for outside help).”
