The San Francisco 49ers might’ve lost another wide receiver in the process of earning their Week 5 win over the Seattle Seahawks.
Wide receiver Deebo Samuel exited Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury that looked scary when it happened. He fell and lost the ball on the way down in an injury that looked akin to a player being knocked out. He walked off the field under his own power and was almost immediately ruled out with a hamstring injury.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Sunday in his postgame press conference didn’t have any immediate update on Samuel’s prognosis.
“No, don’t know yet,” Shanahan said.
Given how rapidly he was ruled out and the way he was moving on the sideline during the game, it’s worth questioning whether he’ll be available for the 49ers’ Week 6 showdown with the Washington Commanders.
If Samuel is out, it adds to the growing list of receivers not available for San Francisco. Ricky Pearsall is on season-ending IR. De’Zhaun Stribling and Demarcus Robinson are on IR and expected to return. Samuel may miss time, and Shanahan wasn’t bullish on veteran Christian Kirk returning from IR where he’s been since final cuts while nursing a calf injury.
“I don’t have an update,” Shanahan said Sunday. “I’ll probably have one for you guys tomorrow, but I don’t think he’s coming back this week.”
The good news for the 49ers is Mike Evans has been able to stay productive while playing through two broken ribs. He was sensational in Sunday’s win. Jacob Cowing, who has been handling punt and kick return duties, was also banged up during the game with an ankle injury, although he did eventually return.
If Samuel is out, the 49ers’ available WRs on the active roster include Evans, Cowing, Brandin Cooks and Jordan Watkins. Undrafted rookies Will Pauling and Wesley Grimes are on the practice squad, along with recently-signed veteran Xavier Smith and longtime special teams contributor Malik Turner.
Depending on the nature of Samuel’s injury and how long he might be out (if he misses any time at all), it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the 49ers either promote a receiver from the practice squad or find another veteran to bring in and eat some snaps until they can get healthier.
