Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr recently addressed the departure of center Kristaps Porzingis, confirming that the two have maintained contact following the player’s decision to step away from professional basketball. The 31-year-old big man, who has been sidelined since late September due to an undisclosed health issue, announced on Friday that he would be leaving the sport indefinitely to focus on his physical well-being.
Speaking to reporters before the Warriors’ matchup against the Orlando Magic, Kerr acknowledged the finality of the situation. Regarding his communication with the veteran center, Kerr stated, “We texted the other day. Obviously, wish him well and hoping for the best for him. He’s made his decision, and there’s not a whole lot else to say.”
This update marks a notable shift in tone for the organization. Earlier in the week, Kerr had candidly admitted that he had neither received nor sought an official explanation for the player’s prolonged absence, a stance that had fueled significant speculation regarding the status of the former All-Star. The situation had become increasingly complex as reports emerged that the team had paused salary payments due to the player’s inability to fulfill his contractual duties.
Porzingis expressed his own frustration regarding the turn of events in a public statement released via social media. He explained that despite his efforts to prepare for the season, his physical condition did not align with his professional expectations. “I’m doing good, but I know what it takes, and I’m not where I want to be to perform at the level that I expect from myself,” Porzingis wrote. He further noted that he intends to work with the Warriors to reach an amicable resolution regarding his contract.
For Kerr and the coaching staff, the focus now shifts entirely to the active roster. Having already recalibrated his tactical approach to accommodate the center’s absence, Kerr has successfully implemented a small-ball strategy that has contributed to the team’s current winning streak as they navigate the remainder of the season.
