Sky Sports: Liverpool could complete January signing after dramatic U-turn

Alex Scott transfer latest as Liverpool monitor Bournemouth stance

Liverpool’s long-running search for more control in midfield appears to have taken a significant step forward, with Bournemouth now understood to be open to a sale of Alex Scott under the right conditions. According to Sky Sports, the south coast club will consider offers in excess of £80m for the England international after he declined to sign a new contract.

That shift matters. Scott has been admired by top clubs for some time and Liverpool are among those with a firm interest. Bournemouth had hoped to secure his long-term future, but with no breakthrough on fresh terms and his deal moving into a more delicate phase, the prospect of a sale is now increasingly realistic.

From Liverpool’s perspective, the logic is clear. Their midfield has lacked balance and composure, particularly in matches where control of possession and rhythm has been required. There is quality in forward areas and variety in attacking profiles, yet the need for a player capable of knitting phases together remains obvious. Scott’s age, technical level and Premier League exposure make him an attractive option.

Why Alex Scott appeals to Liverpool

The 22-year-old is viewed by many recruitment departments as a midfielder with both immediate and long-term value. He can receive under pressure, travel with the ball and operate in different central roles. For a club planning carefully under Andoni Iraola, those traits carry weight. Any decision, though, would also need to account for Bournemouth’s valuation, which is substantial and likely to test even the strongest interest.

There is also the question of timing. A January move always brings extra complexity, especially when the selling club are reluctant to weaken mid-season. Yet the report suggests Bournemouth could do business even then, provided the number is right. That naturally sharpens attention around the situation.

January transfer battle could develop

Liverpool are not alone. Chelsea remain in the mix and have shown repeatedly that they will move aggressively for elite young talent when opportunities arise. If Scott becomes genuinely available, competition is likely to intensify quickly.

At this stage, the key detail is Bournemouth’s change in posture. They are no longer simply trying to renew and hold firm. They are preparing for the possibility of a major sale, and that opens the door for clubs such as Liverpool to explore whether a deal can be made.

The next phase will be about appetite, structure and timing. Liverpool’s interest is real, Bournemouth’s position has softened and the price has been set. That combination usually gets the market moving.

Our View

From a hopeful Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this feels like a move that makes sense on several levels. Alex Scott looks like the type of midfielder who could bring order and energy to a side that has too often been too open through the middle. He is young, Premier League-tested and seems to have the personality to cope with the pressure that comes with a major transfer.

The obvious concern is the fee. £80m is huge money for a player who is still developing, and Liverpool supporters will rightly ask whether that budget could be spread across more than one need. There are still issues in other parts of the squad and no single signing fixes everything.

Even so, there is a strong argument that central midfield is where elite teams are built. If the recruitment staff believe Scott can become one of the league’s best in that position, then paying a premium now may prove smarter than waiting another year. His profile suggests he could grow with the team and become a cornerstone rather than a short-term patch.

Supporters would probably welcome ambition here. The key is conviction. If Liverpool go for Scott, it should be because they see him as a major piece of the next cycle, not simply because an opportunity has appeared. If that belief exists internally, then this is a deal worth pushing hard for.
