The Indianapolis Colts could be active in the wide receiver market before the NFL trade deadline, but a potential option comes with a warning.
Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport named Indianapolis the worst landing spot for Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman.
The Colts‘ need is clear after Alec Pierce aggravated his heel injury in Week 2 and was subsequently placed on injured reserve. Indianapolis previously added veteran Darius Slayton in search of a vertical presence, though they released him recently.
Davenport believes Bateman wouldn’t solve the bigger issue.

“If they trade for a wideout, they need a clear-cut No. 1 rather than another complementary receiver like Bateman,” Davenport wrote.
Bateman, a first-round pick in 2021, has 16 receptions for 233 yards and one touchdown through five games this season. His name has also surfaced in trade discussions, with ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler noting that Bateman’s contract is movable and teams have shown interest in the past.
The Colts currently have Josh Downs, Keenan Allen, Laquon Treadwell, and others handling receiver duties while Pierce recovers on the sideline.
Bateman could help to some degree, but Indianapolis may be better served using valuable trade capital on a receiver that could truly move the needle of its passing attack.
