With all the hype around Jeremiah Smith, one might think the insanely gifted Ohio State wideout would far and away be the nation’s leader in receiving yards and touchdown catches.

Not the case.

Meet Oregon State freshman Jesse Legree, who tops the FBS in both categories. He has 932 receiving yards to Smith’s 916 and has 12 touchdown receptions to Smith’s 11. And he’s done it with 10 fewer catches than Smith, boasting an average of 24.5 yards per catch that ranks third nationally.

While Smith is physically imposing at 6-foot-4 and 222 pounds, Legree is doing all this as a freshman who stands only 5-10 and weighs barely 170 pounds.

Legree punches above his weight, so to speak. He has at least 100 yards receiving in every game this season and has helped the Beavers take the national lead in yards passing per game. Behind its explosive offense, Oregon State has compiled a 4-2 record, including four straight wins.

Legree speedster opened the season with five catches for 136 yards and a touchdown against Big 12 contender Houston. The speedster showed that was no fluke with eight catches for 240 yards and two scores against Texas Tech — a program that reached the College Football Playoff last season.

He followed those eye-opening performances with four catches for 100 yards and a touchdown against Montana and six catches for 109 yards and two scores against UTEP.

He was just getting warmed up. He caught five passes for 156 yards and three scores in a 56-26 win over Colorado State. He then had 10 catches for 191 yards and three more scores in a 66-14 victory over San Diego State. He even hit the Heisman pose after one of his scores against the Aztecs.

Legree benefits from having quarterback Braden Atkinson feed him the ball. Atkinson is a 6-1 sophomore who transferred from Mercer after winning the Jerry Rice Award for the top freshman in the FCS. Atkinson now leads FBS with 2.257 yards passing through six games.

Oregon State’s next game is Saturday against Washington State. Legree’s best remaining chance to draw national attention will be Nov. 14 at Boise State. If he keeps up his current pace up, he might find himself in New York in December.
