Luke Loucks’ first season as Florida State‘s head coach featured plenty of emotional moments, but few were as volatile as the halftime message he delivered during an early-season home game. Loucks recently revealed that he became so frustrated with the Seminoles’ effort that he punched and shattered a television in the locker room at halftime, injuring his hand in the process.

“I was steaming. I mean, I’m hot. I’m level 10 out of 10,” Loucks told the Field of 68. Loucks initially guessed the game may have been against UT Martin, but the details strongly point to Florida State’s Nov. 21, 2025, game against Georgia Southern. A postgame photo shows Seminoles players posing in their home locker room with the shattered television after the victory.

The circumstances also line up almost perfectly with Loucks’ recollection.

Florida State led Georgia Southern 40-29 at halftime, but Loucks was furious with how his team had played despite the 11-point advantage. The Seminoles ultimately scored 58 points after halftime and pulled away for a 98-72 victory.

“I thought the first half was absolutely unacceptable,” Loucks said after that game. “I was really, really upset at halftime. And I think our guys felt it. Our staff certainly felt it.”

That frustration apparently included the television. Loucks said the screen was already old and he had previously asked the staff to replace it. While pacing in front of the team at halftime, he asked whether a new TV had been ordered. Moments later, he took matters into his own hands.

“I just turn, right hand as hard as I can to the TV,” Loucks said. “It shatters. I’m talking like into a billion pieces.”

The punch left Loucks’ hand badly swollen and bruised down his wrist. He never had it X-rayed, but said he thought he may have broken it.

His players responded exactly as he hoped. Florida State was far more aggressive after halftime and eventually turned an uncomfortable performance into a 26-point victory. Loucks said afterward that the Seminoles’ urgency and effort were “far better” in the second half.

The players posed for their traditional postgame photo directly in front of the shattered television, turning the moment into one of the more memorable snapshots from Loucks’ first season.

“We got the new TV ordered that night,” Loucks joked.

The story is humorous in hindsight, but it also offers a glimpse into the intensity Loucks has brought back to his alma mater. As a former Florida State player now leading the program, his frustration was rooted in a standard he believes the Seminoles should meet regardless of the score. An 11-point halftime lead was not enough to satisfy him when he felt the effort and execution were below that standard.

That passion has been a consistent part of Loucks’ message since taking over the program. He has repeatedly made clear that he did not return to Florida State simply to be competitive, but to push the Seminoles back toward the upper tier of the ACC and national relevance.

As for whether another television could become part of that process?

“I probably will not do that again,” Loucks said. “I’m going to come up with something though, and I’ll let you know when I do it.”
