Ewing, a 3-year-old racehorse who won the 2025 Saratoga Special at Saratoga Race Course, has died following an accident at trainer Mark Casse’s facility in Florida, according to one of his co-owners.

Social media personality Griffin Johnson, who owned a stake in Ewing through the West Point Thoroughbreds ownership group, said in a post on X Tuesday afternoon that Ewing, whose two career wins both came at Saratoga in 2025, died after an accident in which he attempted to jump over a fence.

“Unfortunately, he tried to jump a fence last night and did not make it,” Johnson said in a video posted to X.

In the video, Johnson said that Ewing was set to be retired, had recently been gelded and was being retrained for a second, post-racing career.

“He was such a good horse,” Johnson said in the video. “I loved being around him. I learned so much with Ewing.”

A son of Knicks Go, the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and Eclipse Award winner as Horse of the Year for that campaign, Ewing was named in honor of New York Knicks Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing.

Trained by Casse for co-owners West Point Thoroughbreds, D.J. Stable and Kenneth Freirich, Ewing debuted at Saratoga on July 5, 2025 with a 12-length maiden special weight victory. Four weeks later, he returned to the track and won the Grade 2 Saratoga Special by a length.

That ended up being the last victory of Ewing’s five-race career. He returned to action this past February with a sixth-place finish in the Ozark Stakes at Oaklawn Park, then had another five-month layoff before finishing 11th in the Grade 3 Quick Call this past July 19 at Saratoga.

Ewing’s final career race was a seventh-place finish on Aug. 8 in the Colonial Turf Dash Stakes at Colonial Downs in Virginia.
