The Seattle Seahawks handed the San Francisco 49ers a completely avoidable touchdown to end the first half of Sunday’s NFL Week 5 matchup, turning what should have been a routine situation into a disastrous sequence. With just 18 seconds remaining and Seattle backed up near its own goal line, George Holani fumbled on a rushing attempt, allowing San Francisco to recover the ball in the end zone for a touchdown.

It was an awful mistake from Holani, but the Seahawks also have to answer questions about the decision to put the ball in a running back’s hands in that situation. Seattle’s only objective should have been to protect the football, run out the clock, and create some breathing room from its own goal line.

There is no way around it: Holani has to secure the football. The Seahawks were pinned deep, and the running back’s fumble immediately turned a potential halftime situation into six points for San Francisco. The official play-by-play shows Holani taking the handoff with 18 seconds remaining before losing the ball at the goal line. San Francisco recovered it in the end zone for the touchdown.

The mistake was particularly costly because the 49ers had just punted. San Francisco was seemingly content to head into halftime without another scoring opportunity, only for Seattle to give the NFC West rival exactly what it needed.

Seahawks’ play call deserves plenty of criticism

Holani is responsible for the fumble, but Seattle’s decision-making deserves scrutiny as well.

With 18 seconds remaining and the Seahawks backed up against their own goal line, there should have been one priority: get out of the end zone and run out the clock. San Francisco had all three timeouts, but Seattle still had enough time to use quarterback sneaks or another extremely low-risk play designed to move the ball away from the goal line.

Instead, the Seahawks put the football in the hands of a running back deep in their own territory. One mistake could turn into exactly what happened — a defensive touchdown.

Seattle didn’t need to gain much yardage. It simply needed to create some space and make sure San Francisco could not score before halftime.

Against an undefeated 49ers team, giving away a touchdown is especially damaging. San Francisco ultimately capitalized on another Seattle mistake, and the Seahawks entered halftime having gifted their division rival seven points that should never have been available.
