On Friday afternoon, Marquette women’s swimming set 11 different event time records for the pool at the Wellness + Rec Center on campus, all in the same home meet against Northern Iowa!
Okay, I can’t trick you after last time. Yes, this was the first home dual meet in program history, so yes, every single winning time is the best time in pool history, and every best Marquette time is the best home meet time in program history.
There was more history than just that, though. Bridget Corro swam the 1,000 yard freestyle in a time of 10:32.04, which did a number of things. 1) It broke Corro’s program record in the 1,000 yard freestyle, set last week at Iowa with a time of 10:33.77, 2) It set Marquette’s home program record as the best time in the event, 3) it set the Wellness +Rec record in the event because 4) Corro WON the event, beating out teammate Kayla Wieckowski’s time of 10:48.05, which is Marquette’s first ever event victory in a meet, individual or team!
Marquette ultimately won four of the 11 events in the meet. Evelyn Chin won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.11 seconds, which is a new program record after Hannah Quigley’s time of 59.81 last week. Enya Linson won the 200 yard individual medley at 2:09.13, which is both her personal best and now the program record after beating her time of 2:10.26 from the Iowa meet. Finley Warren took the top spot in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 53.65 seconds, and that’s her personal best and program record after posting a 54.52 last week.
Sadly, the wins were not enough for Marquette to pick up the first team win in program history. It was close though, as Northern Iowa had to win the 11th event of the day, the 200 yard freestyle relay, in order to secure enough points to slip past the Golden Eagles for a 103-102 win. UNI picked up 11 points by winning the race, while Marquette had the next two teams in finishing order, but that netted them just six points. Yes, if you do the math, MU was up in points, 96-92, before the race started, but because of how the points got handed out for relays — 11-4-2 — whoever won the race was going to win the meet. Still, Marquette’s total of 102 points is still a new program record for points in a dual meet, and they’re the program record for points in a home dual meet.
Let’s go through the rest of the new home program records for Marquette!
200 yard medley relay — Mackenzie Choinski, Enya Linson, Evelyn Chin, and Nina Newton; 1:48.38 (new program record)
200 yard freestyle — Finley Warren, 1:55.03 (new program record)
50 yard freestyle — Allie Seiler, 24.82 (new program record)
100 yard backstroke — Mackenzie Choinski, 58.37
500 yard freestyle — Kayla Wieckowski, 5:13.94 (ties Corro’s program record)
100 yard breaststroke — Enya Linson, 1:07.85
200 yard freestyle relay — Nina Newton, Allie Seiler, Janna Spetz, and Evelyn Chin; 1:37.96 (new program record, first competition)
Seems like Wellness + Rec Center has a fast pool given that Marquette set new program records in seven events that they competed in last week against Iowa. Are fast pools a thing in swimming? Do you swim faster in warmer water or anything like that?
Marquette’s next competition is coming up on Saturday, October 17th. They’ll be participating in the Wisconsin Showcase at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer. This will presumably be a big multi-team event given the name, so that will be the Golden Eagles first non-dual competition. No, I am not going to do the PROGRAM RECORDS bit for that. It was only funny the second time.
