Former Gophers safety Koi Perich decided to spurn his home-state program and transfer to Oregon in the offseason. He said that he “just wanted to be on a contender and a great program.” After losing to UCLA in Week 6, the Ducks are now 3-2 on the season and searching for answers.
Perich’s decision to transfer from Minnesota to Oregon was highly contentious. He was one of the best high school football prospects to come out of Minnesota in the modern era. The Gophers rolled out the red carpet, giving him an immediate role as a true freshman and an opportunity to play both ways in his second season. The fanbase embraced him as a true hometown hero. That has quickly changed.
Oregon was ranked No. 2 in the preseason AP Top 25, and Perich was considered one of the best transfers in the country. Through five games, the Ducks have losses to UCLA and Oklahoma State, and there’s a good chance they’re unranked in the next AP Poll. His chances of playing on a “contender” in 2026 look unlikely at best.
Perich leads Oregon with 24 total tackles and two interceptions on the season, but many fans have criticized his risky playmaking style in the backend of the defense. He had arguably his best game of the season against the Bruins, recording 11 total tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery.

Perich has been able to fix the tackling issues he had last season at Minnesota, and he continues to show he’s a dynamic playmaker. But when you search his name on X, the social media mob seems to have different opinions.

Perich was a true fan favorite during his freshman season with the Gophers in 2024. Minnesotans love to root for hometown products, and he was immediately beloved. The start of his Oregon career has been a little different.
There was a lot more that went into Perich’s decision to transfer to Oregon, most of which was financial. But he has faced the repercussions of his decision so far. He’s clearly a talented player, and he probably has a professional career in front of him, but he probably expected a different start to his career with the Ducks.
