NaVorro Bowman Jr. has been committed to UConn men’s basketball for only a month, but he’s already distilled the ethos of Dan Hurley’s program to a single word: winning.

Bowman played in last week’s Border League high school basketball tournament, where he burst onto the recruiting scene a year ago and returned as an established five-star guard with his Notre Dame High School team in Sherman Oaks, Calif. He took a moment away from the Las Vegas event to appear on NBA.com and break down his decision to join UConn.

“I really love winning, and UConn, that’s really all it’s about,” Bowman said. “That was a big part, and also the coaching staff felt like home. It was just a great opportunity for me. I see myself playing there, and I feel like it was the best fit for me.”

Along with a passion for winning, Bowman’s inherited toughness also aligns with Hurley’s vision for the UConn program and his emphasis on backcourt toughness. Bowman is the son of four-time All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman Sr. and shares his father’s focus on defensive technique, averaging 1.6 steals per game on the summer EYBL circuit.

The 6-foot-3 combo guard also uses his strong frame as an effective downhill offensive engine, shooting 50% from inside the arc while dishing out 3.5 assists per game. Overall, Bowman averaged nearly 21 points per game – a team high – in AAU play this summer and emerged as one of the nation’s top performers.

As a consensus top-15 recruit, UConn initially contended with many of the country’s premier programs for Bowman’s commitment, including Arizona, Illinois, North Carolina and Kentucky, among others. However, Dan Hurley only needed a weekend to close the deal in this competitive recruitment: Bowman committed to UConn shortly after his official visit to Storrs last month, becoming the first five-star prospect in the 2027 class to commit to a school.

“I feel like Dan Hurley is the coach for me,” Bowman said. “He’s not going to sugarcoat anything. If I’m B.S.-ing on the court, he’s going to let me know.”
