Roger Clemens has seven career Cy Young Awards and two World Series rings in his career trophy case. The former Major League Baseball star may soon add an honor received long after his playing career.
Clemens, a former University of Texas star who then recorded 354 wins as an MLB pitcher across 24 seasons from 1984-2007, joined President Trump on Wednesday for a campaign rally in San Antonio. Trump lauded Clemens for his historic playing career, in which Clemens became one of the greatest pitchers in MLB history in his years with the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Houston Astros. Trump then told Clemens he’ll soon receive one of the nation’s greatest honors: the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Clemens beamed as he shook hands with Trump and addressed the crowd.

“24 years, y’all, this supersedes anything that obviously I’ve done in my playing career,” Clemens said. “And to get it from this man, this president, there wouldn’t be another president I’d want to get it from. … This man, you’re talking about a winner. That’s a winner right there. You see it. And the way he talked about all my stats, he could be my agent, and I guess I could come out of retirement again, all those stats you ran off.”

Clemens, 64, last appeared in an MLB game in 2007, and became eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame early last decade. But he has yet to be inducted into Cooperstown, held out of the Hall of Fame due to his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs. Those allegations don’t appear to bother Trump, who stumped for Clemens to be enshrined in Cooperstown.
“I’m going to call the commissioner of baseball. It’s a ridiculous thing that you’re not in the Hall of Fame with that kind of a record,” Trump told Clemens. “He won seven [Cy Young awards], and they didn’t take him. And by the way, people talk drugs. He never admitted to anything. They have no information. They didn’t find anything.

“He never admitted to anything. He’s just a physical monster, ok? He is.”
President Trump announces he is awarding baseball legend Roger Clemens the Presidential Medal of Freedom during his San Antonio rally. Trump invites the seven-time Cy Young Award winner onstage and says Clemens deserves a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame. A visibly surprised Clemens responds, “Well I’m stunned, number one,” adding that the honor surpasses anything he accomplished during his playing career.

Clemens is the second former star athlete in the Lone Star State to make a political endorsement this month. Former Dallas Cowboys defense end Randy White endorsed Republican Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race last week, in which he said Democrat James Talarico “can’t be trusted.”
