Phil Thompson believes Liverpool made a big transfer mistake in the summer

Jordan Henderson Return? Why Liverpool Passed and Why Trey Nyoni Matters More

Liverpool rarely go backwards in the market. Once a player leaves Anfield, that tends to be the end of it. There are exceptions, Ian Rush being the obvious one, but the rule has held for decades and it framed the summer discussion around a possible Jordan Henderson return.

In the end, there was no comeback. Henderson, now 36, moved to Chelsea instead, while Liverpool and Andoni Iraola kept their distance. For some, that was sensible squad planning. For others, it was a missed opportunity, particularly after more experience walked out of the dressing room.

Phil Thompson falls firmly into the second camp. He believes Liverpool let leadership slip away and should have acted differently.

Jordan Henderson and Liverpool leadership debate

The argument is simple. Liverpool lost senior figures over the summer and experience matters, especially when a new head coach is trying to impose standards and habits. Thompson’s point is less about sentiment and more about dressing room authority.

He said: “I’m one of those, I’d have liked Andy Robertson to have stayed for another 12 months to sort of push Kerkez, but it’s his impact that was in the dressing room.”

That is a fair line of thought. Squad building is not only about who starts on Saturday. It is also about who sets the tone from Monday to Friday. Liverpool have moved on from a number of established personalities and that creates a vacuum, whether supporters like it or not.

Thompson then went further on Henderson. “I’d have had Jordan Henderson back last summer and you go, ‘Jordan Henderson?,’ you all seen what he’s done now. He was taken with England. He was taken to Chelsea by Alonso for a reason.

“You see what I’m trying to say in terms of values at football clubs, we’ve lost a lot of characters.”

That is the core of the case for a Jordan Henderson return. Not flair, not resale value, not long-term planning. Character, leadership, standards.

Andoni Iraola chose a different midfield route

There is another side to this and it is the one Liverpool have clearly accepted. Henderson could still contribute, but only in a limited role. He made 32 Premier League appearances and logged close to 2,000 minutes for Brentford last season, which shows he remained useful. Even so, Chelsea have used him sparingly so far, which tells its own story.

Liverpool also had a clear decision to make after Curtis Jones left for Inter Milan. They could have added a ready-made midfielder, or they could have trusted what they already had. Iraola and Richard Hughes chose the second option.

That does not mean they ignored the need for depth. It means they see development inside the squad as a better answer than a short-term fix. That is a harder call to defend in the short term, but it is at least coherent.

A return for Henderson would have been practical in one sense. He knows the club, understands the pressures and would not need convincing about his role. But football departments tend to be ruthless when they think a cycle has ended. Liverpool looked at the age profile, the minutes available and the pathway for younger players, and decided against it.

Trey Nyoni offers Liverpool a different solution

This is where Trey Nyoni becomes important. If Liverpool did not move for another midfielder, it is because they think Nyoni can accelerate into the first-team picture.

Thompson made that clear when he said: “It’s something we need to do (refresh the midfield), and it’s whether it’s with Trey Nyoni,” he said. “He’s going to be a player. It’s whether he comes to fruition quickly enough.

“I think he’s ready. On the pre-season tour he looked like he’d stepped up. You could see the manager saying to him ‘you have to pass it quicker’, which was our problem last year. You could see Trey Nyoni was giving it in there. I think they have great faith in them which is why they didn’t go for another one.”

That is the real story here. Henderson was the safe, familiar option. Trey Nyoni is the gamble with upside. Liverpool have decided that if they are going to refresh the midfield, they may as well do it properly.

Liverpool midfield call will be judged by output

No one gets points for nostalgia. If Liverpool lack control, personality or depth in midfield over the coming months, the Jordan Henderson debate will return quickly. If Nyoni steps up and Iraola gets enough guidance from the senior core already in place, then the decision will look smart.

For now, the club have made a clear call. They chose evolution over reunion. In modern football, that usually tells you everything.
