As the South Carolina Gamecocks headed into Saturday’s game against the Kentucky Wildcats, the team was preparing without one of their top players, and head coach Shane Beamer addressed the situation before the game.
Stewart is facing a suspension from South Carolina and the SEC, but he’s also facing an indefinite suspension from Beamer himself. Ahead of Saturday’s game, Beamer addressed how Stewart might be able to return.
Stewart’s Suspension
Stewart entered the season as one of the most high-profile players in college football, topping many draft boards as perhaps the top pass-rusher in the 2027 NFL Draft class.
However, after some high-profile incidents during last week’s game against the Alabama Crimson Tide, Stewart is currently suspended.
Stewart punched an Alabama player during last week’s loss at Bryant-Denny Stadium, which earned him a one-game suspension from South Carolina and the SEC, and he was also seen yelling at coaches on the sideline.
As a result of his actions, Stewart was hit with an indefinite suspension from Beamer in addition to the one-game suspension from the SEC.
Will Stewart Return?
Given that there is no timetable for his return, ESPN’s Marty Smith asked Beamer before Saturday’s game how he might be able to return to the team.
Beamer did not give a firm timeline, but he did reiterate the expectations the team has for the players.
“He has to embody the standard of how we do things,” Beamer told Smith. “If I believe he has learned and will be better for it, then I’m willing to have a conversation and talk about him potentially returning.
“His absence against Kentucky certainly doesn’t help us. He’s a first-round draft pick. But at the same time our players know there’s a standard and we are holding one of our most talented players accountable. That’s a strong statement to our team that accountability is real in this program.”
We’ll have to see how long South Carolina will be without their star pass rusher.
