CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ The NFL on Saturday, Oct. 3, announced a $23,417 fine for Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams, stemming from a play in the third quarter of a Week 3 win over the New York Jets on Sept. 27.
Williams caught a pass from quarterback Jared Goff in the red zone and turned upfield before being tackled by cornerback Azareye’h Thomas. Williams lost his helmet in the process. The league apparently did not appreciate Williams dipping his head before contact was made.
It’s the third fine for Williams this season. He was hit with fines for illegal celebrations and vulgar acts ($14,926) and taunting ($11,941) in Detroit’s Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 17.

Jalen Mills elevated
The Lions on Saturday temporarily elevated veteran safety Jalen Mills from the practice squad to the active roster for their prime time bout with the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, Oct. 4. It’s the second consecutive week Mills has been elevated. The Lions signed him to their practice squad Sept. 21.
Mills, in his 11th year, was with the Lions last season. He appeared in three contests.
Safeties on Detroit’s active roster for the Panthers game now include Mills, Chuck Clark, Christian Izien and Bishop Fitzgerald. Clark and Izien are the expected starters. Rookie cornerback Keith Abney II also could be an option as a depth piece.
