Miami football hopes to enter its bye week 5-0 as it pulls into Death Valley for a prime-time date with Clemson. The teams are both 2-0 in ACC play as they hope to cement a spot in Charlotte later this season.
The Hurricanes (4-0) enter as the No. 4 team in the US LBM Coaches Poll and rank among the best teams in the country in most major statistical categories on both offense and defense. Quarterback Darian Mensah has 12 incompletions against 14 touchdown passes (plus one rushing, which he picked up in last week’s 52-3 win over Central Michigan). Wide receiver Malachi Toney enters third in the nation with 564 yards and six TDs as he builds his Heisman case, while top running back Mark Fletcher Jr. is expected to return from injury.
The Tigers (3-1) have won three straight after a humiliating loss to LSU in the opener. QB Tait Reynolds might be asked to do more than he has in his freshman season; standout running back Gideon Davidson is going up against the league’s No. 1 run defense that could see newly healthy Ahmad Moten and Armondo Blount back in the middle of the Canes D-line. Rain is in the forecast this evening in Clemson: Could that be an equalizer?
