Arsenal scrap plans for major expansion of Emirates Stadium
Arsenal have scrapped plans for a major expansion of the Emirates Stadium, according to The Times.
The north London giants had considered ways to increase their stadium’s capacity from its current 60,704 to 80,000.
However, they have decided against pursuing a large-scale redevelopment, which would likely have been extremely costly.
The club will instead focus on improving hospitality, retail, visitor facilities and the overall matchday experience.
Manager Mikel Arteta, who led Arsenal to the Premier League title last season, is understood to have played a major role in the decision.
A major expansion could have forced the club to temporarily relocate and Arteta did not want to disrupt his team’s success by playing home games elsewhere.
The Emirates was the biggest Premier League ground in London when Arsenal moved from Highbury in 2006.
But Tottenham Hotspur’s stadium has surpassed theirs in size, facilities and earning potential after it opened in 2019.
Arsenal have been consistently performing at a high level and competing for major trophies in the last few seasons.
Their success on the pitch means demand for tickets has been very high, prompting the club’s hierarchy to consider ways for increasing the capacity of the Emirates.
Due to cost and logistical reasons, Arsenal have decided on a ‘continued evolution’ of the stadium instead of a large-scale revamp.
