Parrott brace not enough as Ireland draw with Austria
Troy Parrott scored twice, but the Republic of Ireland surrendered a two-goal lead as Austria fought back to earn a 2-2 draw in Dublin.
Ireland made the perfect start when Parrott produced an excellent individual run, beating two defenders before calmly finishing past Florian Wiegele.
The game was twice briefly stopped in the first half after protests. Tennis balls carrying Palestinian flags and messages calling for the game to be stopped were thrown onto the pitch, while a protester later entered the field before being removed by security.
Ireland doubled their advantage before half-time when Ryan Manning was fouled inside the area. Parrott stepped up and confidently converted the resulting penalty.
Austria responded strongly after the break, with substitute Alexander Prass reducing the deficit after Liam Kitching gave the ball away.
The visitors completed their comeback five minutes later. Michael Gregoritsch curled a free-kick beyond Caoimhin Kelleher to level the scores.
Ireland struggled to regain control in the closing stages, but held on for a point. Austria remain top of Group B3, while Ireland sit third and are unbeaten in nine matches at the Aviva Stadium.
