LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — Keeping kids active is becoming more and more of a challenge in today’s tech society.ย
But, here in Lafayette the Parks, Arts, Recreation & Culture (PARC) Department has many ways to make sure you can keep the kids moving their whole bodies, not just their thumbs on those gaming devices.ย
Marcus Marks, the Lafayette PARC’s Manager, said the city offers many different athletic activities kids can get involved in, starting with flag football registration going on now until Oct. 10.
“We’ve fielded a few calls this week, I’ll say,” Marks said. “Asking about flag football, volleyball and even getting some interest in our spring sports already and basketball. But parents are calling and they want to keep their kids active.”

In addition to flag football, Lafayette PARC has volleyball going on now, and basketball is right around the corner.
Phillip Mason is the PARC Recreation Coordinator, and runs the volleyball program.
“All of our kids who have participated do enjoy being in our program,” Mason said. “It is a developmental league. So we do teach a lot of the fundamentals and the basics to them. But we have had quite a few of our kids in our programs go on to play middle school and high school volleyball.”
PARC Recreation Coordinator Steve Peloquin said these rec programs are extremely important to provide these children with positive experiences, and not to create elite athletes.
“Not every kid’s going to go on to play Division One sports. Not every kid’s going to go on to play professional sports. It’s about memories.” Peloquin said. “I didn’t play professional sports. I should have, you know, but it wasn’t meant to be. So it’s all about memories. And that’s really what we’re here for, for our youth sports, developing kids, and most of all, giving those kids some memories.”
