PROVIDENCE โ It was a highlight for Brown and a shock for the University of Rhode Island when the two football programs battled forย the Governorโs Cup a year ago.ย
The Bears capitalized on four turnovers and christened a new venue at Centreville Bank Stadium with a victory over the Rams. Brown lifted the trophy for the first time since 2017 and snapped a six-game losing streak in the series thanks to a 28-21 triumph.ย
URI left Pawtucket stinging but was able to rebound in Coastal Athletic Association play, closing out a second straight league championship and eventual Football Championship Subdivision playoff berth. This time, the Rams enter reeling, and the Bears could deliver what would effectively be a knockout blow to their 2026 campaign.ย
โWe have a new standard,โ Brown defensive lineman Ike Odimegwu said. โWe have a new group of seniors. We kind of hold each other to our standard, which is most important.โ ย
Both teamโs captains gathered Wednesday afternoon at the State House and are entering the noon kickoff Saturday afterย defeats, but URIโs was the more damaging. The Rams are out of the national polls and have lost two straight against FCS foes for the first time since 2023. They staggered to a 22-18 setback at North Carolina A&T, a winless foe entering a Saturday afternoon kickoff at home.ย
โWeโve just got to execute,โ URI defensive back Andre DePina-Gray said. โWeโve got to execute and trust one another. Everyone has just got to do their job, essentially.โย
Brown threw three interceptions and saw a chance to knock off Harvard slip through its fingers under Friday night lights. The Bears suffered a 14-10 defeat in the rain, a game dominated by the defenses on both sides. Odimegwu and his teammates have allowed just 24 points through two games, building upon some improvements they made under new coordinator Dan Mulrooney a season ago.ย
โWe attack every week with the same intensity,โ Odimegwu said. โWeโre very consistent with the way we attack each game.โย

URI allowed a fumble return for a touchdown and threw the deciding interception inside the final minutes against the Aggies last week. The Rams (2-3) turned to former Barrington standout Alex McClelland at quarterback in the second half to replace Tyler Budge, and they have yet to name a starter for Saturday. Both have experienced varying degrees of difficulty spelling Devin Farrell (foot), who has missedย the first five games and has no firm timeline to debut this fall.ย
โWe can clearly see whatโs going on,โ DePina-Gray said. โWeโre not executing to our best ability.โย
Brown (1-1) lost this game just once between its 1909 debut and a defeat in 1952, but the modern rebranding has been considerably more even. URI holds a 23-20 edge since a rebranding in 1981, and Gov. Dan McKee will be on hand Saturday to present the silver trophy to the winners. McKee was presented with gifts by both Bears coach James Perry and Rams coach Jim Fleming in what is likely his final time presiding over this game while holding his office.ย
โIt’s not just the game,โ McKee said. โItโs the game plan, which is a lifetime game plan. Thatโs what you bring into the mix here.โย
James Murphy threw two touchdown passes and Matt Childs ran for two more in last yearโs edition, as Brown built a 28-14 lead late in the third quarter and couldnโt be caught. Farrell threw three touchdown passes โ one to Marquis Buchanan (right knee), who left and returned to Saturdayโs game โ but added a pair of interceptions. URI outgained the Bears by more than 100 total yards but made the critical mistakes that helped decide the outcome.
